Edvard Grieg’s incidental music for the 1867 play Peer Gynt has lived on in the form of two orchestral suites, extracted by the composer more than a decade after the play first premiered. The first and last movements of the Suite No. 1 are particularly famous: “Morning Mood” opens with a pastoral flute melody, while “In the Hall of the Mountain King” repeats an ominous bass melody at an increasingly frenetic tempo.
This transcription is for tuba-euphonium octet, but if desired, the Tuba 1 part can be assigned to a fifth euphonium player instead.
