This brass quintet is in the form of a short symphony, and each movement is inspired by a constellation. “Musca” illustrates the misadventures of a little fly in a big world; “Ursas” follows a big bear and a little bear, played by the tuba and horn respectively, on a walk in the woods; “Centaurus” is inspired by the majesty of a mythical creature, half-man, half-horse; and “Orion” depicts the (slightly wayward) march of the legendary archer and hunter.

— Nathanael Kumar

This work was commissioned by QuinTed — Ted Ekstrand, Norah Krantz, Aaron Fulton, Jonas Ruelas, and Addie Canning — with support from the Institute for Music Leadership at the Eastman School of Music.
